Luis Bravo is a Uruguayan poet, performance poet, essayist, literary critic and professor. He has published eleven books of poetry, two multimedia works, and four books of literary criticism. Titles of recent publications and CDs include Árbol veloz, Liquen, Tamudando, Lluvia, and Areñal:ene topos bilingüese & other sounds. Recent nonfiction works include Voz y palabra: historia transversal de la poesía uruguaya 1950-1973 (2012),La pipa de tinta china / Cuadernos carcelarios de Ibero Gutiérrez (2014), and Las islas invitadas: Poesías completa de Julio Inverso (2013). His poems have been translated for anthologies and international journals, in multiple languages including Portuguese, German, Estonian, French, Swedish, English, and Farsi. He was a resident in the Iowa International Writing Program (2012) and holds a PhD in Iberian and Latin American Studies from the University of Notre Dame. Presently Bravo is a professor of Uruguayan and Latin American Literature at the University of Montevideo.
Berta García Faet
Berta García Faet (Valencia, Spain, 1988) is a poet and translator and the recipient of numerous literary prizes. She is the author of seven books of poetry: Corazón tradicionalista. Poesía 2008 – 2011, (La Bella Varsovia, 2018), Los salmos fosforitos [Fluorescent Psalms] (La Bella Varsovia, 2017), La edad de merecer [The Eligible Age] (La Bella Varsovia, 2015), Fresa y herida [Strawberry and Wound](Premio Nacional de Poesía “Antonio González de Lama” 2010; Diputación de León, 2011), Introducción a todo [Introduction to Everything] (IV Premio de Poesía Joven “Pablo García Baena”; La Bella Varsovia, 2011), Night club para alumnas aplicadas [Nightclub for Studious Schoolgirls] (VII Premio Nacional de Poesía “Ciega de Manzanares”; Vitruvio, 2009), and Manojo de abominaciones [A bunch of Abominations] (XVI Premio de Poesía “Ana de Valle”; Ayuntamiento de Avilés, 2008). María Eugenia Vaz Ferreira
María Eugenia Vaz Ferreira, born in Montevideo in 1875, was the vanguard for women poets in Uruguay in the early twentieth century. Critics have variously categorized her work as Parnassian, Symbolist, Romantic, and Modernist, implying that she wrote across literary styles. Her poetry addresses themes of longing, hetero- and homoerotic love, solitude, and alienation. Vaz Ferreira is perhaps most closely identified with modernismo, wherein her work can be read as shared human experience and an assertive expression of female consciousness. In addition to poetry she wrote three dramas in verse and composed musical scores. She became a professor of literature and Secretary of the University for Women in Montevideo. Afflicted with episodic depression and chronic illness, she died at age 49. Although her literary work is truly outstanding, to date few poems have been available in translation. The Island of the Songs is the first full-length translation of her book La isla de los cánticos, published posthumously in 1925.
Juana Rosa Pita
Juana Rosa Pita (b. Havana, Dec. 8,1939) is a poet, writer, editor, and translator. Having left Cuba in 1961, she has lived in Washington, Madrid, New Orleans, Miami and Boston, where she has resided since 2005. Since 1975 when she was awarded the First Prize in Poetry from Latin America in Málaga, Spain, she has published 33 books of poetry; among them: Viajes de Penélope (1980), translated into Italian (Campanotto, 2007) and into English (Penelope’s Journeys, 2011); Sorbos de luz/Sips of Light (1990); Una estación en tren (1994), ‘Premio Letras de Oro’ (1993); Tela de concierto (1999), El ángel sonriente/L’angelo sorridente (2013), and Se desata el milagro/Si scatena il miracolo (2016), and Infancy of Our Bread (2020).
For her body of work, she has received prizes such as the ‘VIII Premio Internazionale Ultimo Novecento’ (Pisa, 1985) and the Premio Alghero “Culture for Peace” (1987). Extensively studied and translated into six languages, her poems have been featured in anthologies such as New Directions in Prose and Poetry 49 (New York,1985), translated by Donald D. Walsh; Poesía cubana contemporánea (FCE: México 2003); and Otra Cuba secreta (Madrid, 2011). A comprehensive anthology of her poetic work was published in Spanish inspring 2019 by Editorial Verbum in Madrid. Soon afterward, Editorial Deslinde, also in Madrid, chose her recent poetic volume, Imaginando la verdad, as its opening publication.
Manuel Vilas, born in Barbastro, Huesca in Spain in 1962 writes novels, short stories, and poetry. He also writes literary criticism for the Heraldo de Aragón and El Mundo, as well as other literary magazines. Recent books of poetry include Amor: poesía reunida 1988 – 2010, Gran Vilas, and El hundimiento. Recent novels include Los inmortales, El luminoso regalo (translated into French and Italian), Ordesa, which is widely celebrated in Spanish media as the 2018 Book of the Year with translations into multiple languages, and most recently Alegría. Significant among his many awards and prizes are the Premio Generación del 27 (2014), the Premio de las Letras Aragonesas 2015 (2016), the Premio Planeta, second place, for Alegría (2019), and the French Premio Femina Etranger for Ordesa (2019).
